Electrical cardioversion

Electrical cardioversion should be carried out under general anaesthesia or conscious sedation given by a healthcare professional with the appropriate training and experience.

The first step in preparing to administer electrical cardioversion is to ensure that the defibrillator is set to deliver a synchronised shock. An unsynchronised shock could coincide with a T wave and cause ventricular fibrillation (VF).
