ALS algorithm

- A new patient

You have just arrived on the ward when you are presented with a patient to treat. Samantha Low, a 60-year-old woman, has had severe diarrhoea and vomiting for the last two days. Her medications include furosemide and an ACE inhibitor.
Samantha Low - a 70-year-old woman.

You follow the ABCDE (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure) approach and note the following:

  • A : Clear
  • B : RR 20 min-1
  • C : P 130 min[sup]-1[/sup], BP 80/50 mmHg
  • D : Responds to voice
  • E : No rashes, looks pale
